Samuel's Gorge
Established in 2003 by winemaker Justin McNamee, the winery is housed in a historic barn built in 1853, perched atop a ridge that offers breathtaking views of the Onkaparinga River National Park to the north and the ocean to the south.
The philosophy behind Samuel’s Gorge is deeply rooted in the connection between people and place. The winery focuses on crafting wines that reflect the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape. The label itself is an artistic representation of this terrain, with intricate details woven into its design.
Samuel’s Gorge specializes in five key varietals: Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Graciano, and Tempranillo. These wines are meticulously handcrafted using traditional techniques that emphasize texture, complexity, and harmony. Indigenous yeast is used in fermentation, and the process is deliberately slow to enhance the depth and character of each vintage.
Visitors to Samuel’s Gorge are welcomed into a warm and inviting cellar door experience. The winery offers relaxed tastings in its charming, rustic setting, where guests can enjoy the rich aromatics and silkiness of the wines. During harvest season in late summer, visitors can witness the winemaking process firsthand, engaging with the team as they bring each vintage to life.
The atmosphere at Samuel’s Gorge is both intimate and immersive. In winter, guests can cozy up by the fireplace, while in summer, they can relax on the lawns, soaking in the sunshine and stunning views. The winery’s commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity ensures that each bottle tells a story of the land, the vintage, and the imagination of its makers.
