Maxwell Wines
Maxwell Wines is a family-owned winery renowned for its handcrafted, rich, and robust reds that embody the terroir and tradition of the region. Established in 1979 by Mark Maxwell, the winery has built a reputation for producing premium Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola, Fiano, and Verdelho, alongside its famous Maxwell Meads, making it the largest producer of mead in the Southern Hemisphere.
Carved into a limestone hill, Maxwell Wines offers a holistic wine experience, where visitors can explore the estate vineyards, cellar door, and Ellen Street Restaurant. The cellar door, perched above the winery, provides a window into its soul, allowing guests to enjoy guided wine flights while overlooking the rolling hills of McLaren Vale.
The winery’s estate vineyards, spanning 100 acres, are positioned on south-facing slopes, benefiting from the moderating effects of the Gulf of St Vincent. The oldest vineyard, planted to Grenache, dates back to 1928, while the Ellen Street Shiraz block was established in 1953. The pinnacle of Maxwell’s portfolio is the Minotaur Reserve Shiraz, crafted from 50-year-old vines and aged for up to 24 months in oak barrels.
Beyond winemaking, Maxwell Wines is home to Ellen Street Restaurant, where Head Chef Fabian Lehmann, with experience in Michelin-starred restaurants, curates a menu that champions fresh, seasonal produce. The restaurant is open for lunch Friday to Sunday and dinner on Saturday evenings, offering a memorable food and wine experience.
Maxwell Wines also embraces sustainability, being a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. The winery exports its wines to Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA, further solidifying its global presence.
