Kay Brothers
Kay Brothers is one of South Australia’s most historic wineries, renowned for its traditional winemaking techniques and century-old vines. Established in 1890 by brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay, the winery has remained family-owned for over 130 years, making it the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands.
Kay Brothers is best known for its rich, full-bodied Shiraz, particularly the Block 6 Shiraz, sourced from vines planted in 1892. The estate also produces Grenache, Mataro, and Cabernet Sauvignon, each crafted with a hands-on approach that honors the winery’s heritage. The original basket press, installed in 1928, is still used today, reflecting the winery’s commitment to traditional methods.
The Kay Brothers Cellar Door, located at Amery Vineyards, offers visitors a unique tasting experience, where they can explore estate-grown wines while enjoying panoramic views of McLaren Vale. The winery’s historic diaries, dating back to 1891, provide insight into the early days of viticulture and winemaking, making Kay Brothers a living piece of South Australian wine history.
