Winding through rolling vineyards, historic villages, and sun-dappled gum trees, the Riesling Trail is one of Australia’s most iconic rail trails—and a must-do for anyone visiting the Clare Valley. Stretching 33km from Auburn to Barinia, this former railway line has been transformed into a scenic walking and cycling path that connects over 30 cellar doors, gourmet eateries, and some of the region’s most charming landscapes.
Why It’s Called the Riesling Trail
The trail takes its name from the Clare Valley’s signature varietal—Riesling—a crisp, citrus-driven white wine that thrives in the region’s cool nights and slate-rich soils. Along the way, you’ll pass through Watervale, Sevenhill, and Clare, all home to some of Australia’s most celebrated Riesling producers like Grosset, Pikes, and Jim Barry.
How to Ride (or Walk) It
- Length: 33km (Auburn to Barinia)
- Surface: Well-maintained gravel, mostly flat and family-friendly
- Best for: Cycling, walking, e-bikes, prams, and even wheelchairs
- Bike Hire: Available from Riesling Trail Bike Hire, Scoot the Valley, and Clare Valley Cycle Hire
You can tackle the full trail in a day or break it into smaller sections. Many visitors opt for a one-way ride with a taxi return—or join a guided tour that includes wine tastings and lunch stops.

When to Go
The trail is beautiful year-round, but autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November) offer the best weather and scenery—think golden vines or blooming canola fields. Summer can be hot, and some cellar doors may close in winter.
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, a casual walker, or just in it for the wine and views, the Riesling Trail is a perfect blend of nature, heritage, and hospitality. It’s not just a trail—it’s a journey through the heart of Clare Valley’s wine soul.
